Cinderella’s Sunday matinee is this year’s last county schools’ performance

Cinderella, Union County Schools Theater

The Union County Schools Theater will present its last performance of this years presentation, Cinderella today, Sunday October 22nd at 2:00 PM. The Rogers & Hammerstein version of the fairy tale is being presented at the Magnolia Civic Center in New Albany.

All the young audience members in their Cinderella costumes attest to the enduring popularity of this tale. Those seated around us seemed quite enthralled with the music, costumes, scenery and performances, not to mention meeting the actors close up on the way out of the theater.

Director Clint Reid assembled a cast and crew of over 70 students from four Union County high schools. They have worked together for months to bring this production to the stage. This event is highly anticipated each year, and performances sell out pretty quickly. There were a (very) few available seats when the curtain went up at the Saturday evening performance, so check early if you need a ticket for Sunday. No promises.

This is the tenth annual musical comedy performed by students in the Union County Theater Program. Clint Reed was hired by county schools Superintendent Kent Basil in 2008 and given the task of creating the only theater program of any county school system in Mississippi. It is still believed to be the only one.

How Union County came to have Mississippi’s first, and possibly only, county schools’ theater program.
