The Union County Board of Supervisors has re-appointed District Four Supervisor Randy Owen to the board of directors of the Three Rivers Planning and Development District. The board took the action at its Monday, July 16, meeting.

Three Rivers is a private, non-profit organization that promotes economic development and provides community planning services to county and municipal governments in north Mississippi. Besides Union County, the core service area of Three Rivers includes Calhoun, Chickasaw, Itawamba, Lafayette, Lee, Monroe and Pontotoc counties.

Three Rivers provides management services for a variety of operations such as the Tanglefoot Trail, which starts in downtown New Albany and runs 43 miles over a former railroad right-of-way to Houston in Chickasaw County. Three Rivers also provides services such as grant applications, workforce development, Medicaid waivers and billing of solid waste fees.

According to its 2017 filing of IRS Form 990, Three Rivers Planning and Development District had assets worth $38-million and revenues of $19-million. Its offices are located at 75 South Main Street in Pontotoc.
Other board actions Monday included:

  • Approving a payment of $92,898 to Patton Construction Company for work at the Martintown East industrial development project.

  • Discussion of cleaning up a property on County Road 158. The cleanup was initiated when other land owners in the area complained and petitioned the board to take action. The board was told that the owner of the land had started the cleanup but had stopped working on it.
  • Approved a manual check for $4,927.50 to Zinzer Tree Service for removing deteriorated oak trees from the courthouse lawn.

The county board will meet again at 10 a.m. on Monday, August 6.
