Breast Cancer Awareness luncheon draws a full house

Baptist Hospital’s annual free luncheon for breast cancer awareness Wednesday at Hillcrest Baptist Church was “sold out.”

The 160 guests filled the church dining hall and heard Dr. Jason Lohmeier, a radiologist at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union County, speak about the process by which breast cancer is diagnosed and treated.

Dr. Lohmeier said that only about one percent of women who go through preliminary diagnostic procedures have breast cancer. He described some of the technology, including 3-D mammography, available at Baptist-Union County.

Lohmeier emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and treatment in assuring long-term survival of those who do have breast cancer.

Following Dr. Lohmeier’s presentation, Mabel (Mrs. Bennie) Rakestraw spoke about her experience as a breast cancer survivor. She described her diagnosis, treatment and anxieties during her recovery.

As a part of its extensive community outreach work, Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union County hosts its annual breast cancer awareness luncheon and program every October. There is no charge for the event, but participants must preregister.
