New Albany now has second gun shop burglary suspect in custody.

A second suspect in the June 5 burglary of the 2A Armaments gun shop and Pure gas station and resulting high-speed pursuit, has been returned to New Albany, according to Police Chief Chris Robertson.

The chief said the Memphis Fugitive Task Force arrested Anthony Ailsworth, 25, of Memphis and he was returned to New Albany Tuesday.

Dontravius Adams, 27, was picked up in Memphis and returned to New Albany several weeks ago.

Robertson said it has not been confirmed but he has been told that the third suspect in the burglary, Lederrius Brown, was severely injured in a vehicle crash following a high-speed pursuit and is not expected to survive.

This would effectively bring the investigation to a close.

Ailsworth is also being charged with two counts of commercial burglary with bond set at $200,000

The incident was initially reported about 3:30 a.m. when a citizen going to work spotted the suspects in the gun shop and called 911. The suspects were able to grab a variety of weapons and get to their vehicle as police arrived and a chase began on I-22 with other law enforcement agencies involved from Union, Benton and Marshall counties.

Officers were able to puncture the suspects’ tires at Holly Springs and they immediately fled from the car.

However, New Albany police officer Jimmy Dean Whitten was injured when he was forced to a sudden stop behind the suspects’ care and a Marshall County officer behind him was not able to stop in time, stricking Whitten’s patrol car as he was getting out. Whitten is still recovering.

Officers were able to identify the suspects with help from Memphis law enforcement and surveillance video was available from the gun shop. It was also determined that the trio had taken a safe from the gas station at Hwy. 15 and Bankhead Street before breaking into the gun shop.

All the stolen items were recovered after the suspects fled from the car.
