Union County Heritage Museum Director Jill Smith is preparing a quilt exhibit at the museum.

The exhibit, expected to open after Labor Day, includes a variety of types of quilts, some as early as the 1800s.

She said there are friendship quilts, one relating to the Underground Railroad, one with names from the Thaxton area, an Eastern Star quilt and a contest quilt from Myrtle. People paid a small fee to have their names added to the quilt and one of them won the quilt in a drawing.

In connection with the exhibit, Smith said she is planning to begin quilting with anyone interested invited to participate. Also to be made will be a COVID-19 commemorative quilt.
