Armed suspect surrenders to deputies after 10-hour standoff

What was described as a domestic dispute that began in Pontotoc County turned into a 10-hour standoff in heavy rain in the New Harmony community overnight.

Sheriff Jimmy Edwards said that Randolph Parker Jr., 41, of Pontotoc was apparently in a domestic dispute with his wife earlier Tuesday, and that spilled over into Union County.

Details were somewhat sketchy in that those involved had been up all night.

Apparently, around 9 p.m. deputies got behind Parker in the New Harmony area and a short pursuit followed. “Then, on County Road 205 he got his back tire stuck,” the sheriff said. “He got out and brandished a weapon.”

As the suspect moved away, officers called for backup to keep the man in a contained area.

What followed was a negotiation and standoff in the heavy rain and storm as officers tried to get the man to surrender without hurting himself or anyone else.

“We had ten officers out all night and I want to thank Tupelo PD for sending one,” the sheriff said. “Later they sent two negotiators.”

Ultimately, at about 9:45 a.m. Wednesday, 10 hours later, Parker surrendered without further incident. No one was injured.

The sheriff said they were still investigating the incident but that Parker probably would be charged in Union County with being a felon in possession of a firearm, felony fleeing, DUI and some other misdemeanor charges.

He added that Pontotoc County would likely charge the suspect with felony aggravated domestic violence.

“I’m just proud it came to a resolution without anyone being hurt,” Edwards said concerning the standoff.
