Mississippi man killed, buried without family’s knowledge, laid to rest a second time

In March this year, Dexter Wade, 37, was struck and killed by an off-duty Jackson Police officer in a department SUV. Wade was reportedly crossing a highway at night, shortly after leaving his mother’s home following an argument. At the scene, police said they were only able to identify Wade by a prescription pill bottle on his person. Just a few days after, Wade’s mother, Bettersten Wade, filed a missing person report with the JPD. It wasn’t until late August that Bettersten learned what had become of her son. By then, he’d been laid to rest in an unmarked pauper’s grave near the Hinds County Penal Farm. 

The coroner’s office claimed they’d tried to reach Wade’s mother multiple times, but she says she never got the call. In the meantime, Bettersten had taken to social media to search for her son. She was repeatedly in contact with JPD for any news of her son and was told there was none. It was only after a different investigator took over her son’s case that she got the news.

Bettersten has retained the services of civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who roundly condemned both the JPD and the Hinds County coroner’s office. Crump arranged to have Wade exhumed and ordered a private autopsy. Buried along with Wade was a wallet containing several forms of ID, including some with his home address.

Wade was finally laid to rest yesterday, having received the proper funeral he was previously denied. It’s unclear what legal ramifications there will be, but Crump has called for a federal investigation into the actions of the JPD.

Israeli cabinet approves hostage release plan with 4-day pause in Gaza shelling

After coming under increasing public pressure, President Biden has in turn pressured Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to push forward with a deal to pave the way for the release of 50 hostages taken by Hamas on October 7.  A few minutes ago, just before dawn in Israel, government ministers agreed on a deal. Hamas will release 50 hostages over the next for days, for which purpose Israel has agreed to a four-day pause in its bombardment and military incursion into Gaza. Every ten hostages released will buy another day of truce. However, the cabinet confirmed that even if all the hostages are returned, they intend to press forward with their military assault in Gaza, the official objectives of which remain unclear.

There had previously been reports from multiple sources that Netanyahu was reluctant to negotiate for the hostages. Several weeks ago, sources privy to negotiations with Hamas had stated that Netanyahu did not want two Israeli hostages released. Netanyahu’s office claimed that this was propaganda, and two hostages were released shortly thereafter.

Then last week, Trita Parsi, a co-founder of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft who is well-connected in diplomatic circles, tweeted a startling allegation. “Diplomat from key US ally tells me that Netanyahu is blocking the release of Israeli hostages in Gaza. Biden is well aware but refuses to pressure Netanyahu publicly. The diplomat says Biden’s unconditional support for Israel has made Netanyahu more obstinate and inflexible”.
