Billy Self, 70
February 14, 1954 – September 11, 2024
Billy G. Self, known affectionately as Billy to his friends and family, passed away on September 11, 2024, at the age of 70. Born on Valentine’s Day in 1954, in the heart of Pontotoc County, MS, Billy’s life was a testament to the enduring power of love and kinship. Tragically, his life was cut short due to a drowning accident while pursuing his passion for fishing in Cahoma County, MS.
Billy’s early years in Mississippi set the stage for a life rich in family values and outdoor adventures. He was the beloved husband of Donna Henson Self, and together they blended a family that was the center of his world. Billy was a devoted father to his sons, Christopher Self (married to Lacey) and Kevin Self. He was also a cherished stepfather to Rebecca Bolen and Amanda Welch (married to John). His role as a brother was held with equal importance, and he is survived by his sister, Vivian Tackett (married to Gary), and his brothers, Jerry Self, Troy Self (married to Melissa), George Self (married to Sue), Bradley Self (married to Tammy), and David Self (married to Cindy).
Billy’s legacy extends to his adored grandchildren, Logan Self, Dexter Self, Alex Self, and Braxton Self, who brought him immense joy and pride. His step-grandchildren, Chandler Bolen, Anna Killough (married to Colton), Cameron Burk, Logan Burk, Trystan Giompoletti, and Ethan Sysco, along with his step-great-grandson, Walker Killough, also held a special place in his heart. Predeceased by his parents, William Thomas Self and Flora Geneva Williams Self and a brother, Jimmy Self, Billy’s memory will be honored and cherished by all who knew him.
Professionally, Billy dedicated many years as a skilled plumber with National Economy Plumbers before his well-deserved retirement. His work ethic and commitment to his craft earned him the respect and friendship of his colleagues and those within the community he served.
Beyond his professional life, Billy was a man of many interests and simple pleasures. An avid outdoorsman, he found peace and contentment in the quiet moments spent hunting and fishing. These activities were more than hobbies; they were a reflection of his deep appreciation for nature and the tranquility it provided.
One of Billy’s most unique and endearing pastimes was playing with his pet squirrel, a quirky companion that brought laughter and delight to his family. His gentle, friendly, and loving nature was evident in the way he cared for his little friend, and this kindness extended to all living creatures.
Above all, Billy cherished the time spent with his grandchildren. Whether he was sharing stories of his youth, teaching them the finer points of casting a line, or simply enjoying their company, these moments were the ones he treasured most. His gentle spirit and warm presence will be profoundly missed by his grandchildren, who will carry forward the lessons and love he imparted.
Billy’s life was a portrait of a man who lived with intention and love. His gentle demeanor, friendly smile, and loving embrace made him a cherished figure in the lives of many. As we bid farewell to Billy G. Self, we celebrate a life well-lived, marked by the joy he found in the simple things and the love he shared with those around him.
