Carl Edwin “Ed” Fugitt, 70

Carl Edwin “Ed” Fugitt passed away on Saturday, October 12, 2024, at his home after a lengthy illness at age 70. He was born on May 15, 1954, in Dyersburg, TN to the late Tildon Orville and Frances Fulgham Fugitt. His family moved to Tupelo when he was 9 months old where he resided until he moved to his present home in Plantersville, MS, at the age of 18.
Ed graduated from Tupelo High School in1973. At the age of 22, he began his career with Tupelo Fire Department, retiring in 1996 with the rank of Captain. He dearly loved the Fire Department and considered all his fellow fire fighters as family. Ed’s second career was in law enforcement serving in various positions for over 33 years, including Plantersville Police Department where he served as both an officer and the Chief of Police. He then worked for the Lee County Sheriffs Department in several positions, retiring in 2011 as Lee County Fire Investigator.
Ed accepted Christ Jesus as his Lord and Savior as a young boy in the First United Methodist Church of Tupelo. In his younger adult years, he enjoyed owning a stock race car, watching NASCAR, boating, and woodworking. After becoming disabled, he spent most of his days watching westerns, and the History and Military channels. He loved to research the history of WWII and Vietnam. Ed loved his town, county, state and nation and was a deeply patriotic American citizen.
Ed is survived by his soul mate, best friend, and loving wife of 36 years, Relda Fugitt of Plantersville; one daughter, Stephanie Wilson, of Tupelo; one granddaughter, AnnaJae Pappa, of Tupelo and a great granddaughter; two brothers-in-law, John Mabry of Saltillo, and Richard (Dorothy) Wilson of Plantersville; one special niece, Amy (Scott) Tackett and their daughters, Mackenzie and Rebecca; several cousins and many special friends. Last but not least, he leaves his loyal companion and dog, Sarge.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his grandparents, Henry Clovis and Sybil Fugitt of Booneville and Gertrude and Bud Fulghum of Starkville; sister, Brenda Mabry; nephew, Byron Mabry and two daughters, Beebe and Bonnie Wilson.
A graveside service will be held at 1 PM Tuesday, October 15, 2024 at Lee Memorial Park in Verona. There will be no formal visitation. The family will be available after the graveside service to visit at the Cemetery. Holland Funeral Directors-Tupelo is honored to be serving their neighbors.
