John Luther Shumpert, 78

July 29, 1946 – October 23, 2024

TUPELO – John L. Shumpert, 78, died Wednesday, October 23, 2024 at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo surrounded by his loving family. He was born July 29, 1946 in Plantersville, MS to the late Gertrude Morris Shumpert and John Leather Shumpert. John was a member of Red Oak Grove MB Church. He served in the Mississippi National Guard and worked for the Frisco Lines Railroad. He was known as “Walking Tall” as his CB handle. He was an outdoorsman and loved repairing things.



A service celebrating John’s life will be held on Monday, October 28, 2024 at 6 PM in the Sadie M. Holland Memorial chapel at Holland Funeral Directors in Tupelo. The family will receive friends from 5 PM until service time at the funeral home on Monday. John is survived by his loving wife, Joyce Anthony Shumpert; two sons, Cedrick Shumpert (Treca) of Plantersville and Damon Williams (Shameka) of Alabama; six daughters, Elaynia Dilworth (Donald) of Wren, Angela Williams (Benjamin) of Louisiana, Melissa Shumpert (Derek) of Tupelo, LaShonda Harley (Freddie) of Tupelo, LeeAnn Cummings of Tupelo, and Jennifer Lewis of Georgia; 18 Grand Children; 16 Great Grand Children; and three sisters, Louise Shumpert of Plantersville, Willene Denman of Illinois, and Teresa Hayes of Plantersville. He was preceded in death by his parents.
