Hugh David Gilliland, Jr., 64

November 5, 1960 – November 10, 2024

Mr. Hugh David Gilliland, Jr. was born on November 5, 1960, to the union of Hugh D. Gilliland, Sr. and Elois Gilliland, in Memphis, Tennessee. Hugh moved to East St. Louis, IL at an early age with his family. He was educated in the East Saint Louis Public School District 189, graduating in the Class of 1978 from East Saint Louis Sr. High School. After graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Army.

Hugh accepted Christ at an early age and united with Pilgrim Rest M.B. Church under the pastorage of the late Reverend Edward I. Jennings. He was employed with Tower Motors for many years and Brown Shoe Company. He later relocated to Blue Mountain, Mississippi, and was employed with Profile, Inc. for 19 years.

Hugh was full of laughter and love for his family and friends. He was funny and would keep you laughing, but didn’t mind getting you straight if he had to. He did not meet a stranger and was full of conversation. He would make friends wherever he went. He and his brother Tommie were inseparable; where you saw one, you saw the other. They were not only brothers, but best friends. He was often called by the nickname “Dawg”.

Hugh was preceded in death by his father, Hugh D. Gilliland, Sr.; brother, Patrick N. Gilliland; and grandmother, Edna Cook-Harris.

Hugh leaves to cherish his loving memory: his mother, Elois Gilliland of Belleville, Illinois; daughter, Krystine Precious King (Demetrius) of Collinsville, Illinois; son, Hugh D. Gilliland III of East St. Louis, Illinois; sisters, Gwendolyn Gilliland-Green of Cahokia Heights, Illinois and Theresa Patterson of Belleville, Illinois; brothers, Tommie R. (Dorothy) Gilliland of Blue Mountain, Mississippi and Raymond Q. Cardell Gilliland of Cahokia Heights, Illinois; two grandchildren, Isaiah and Ezekiel King of Collinsville, Illinois; a very special and dear friend, Marilyn Johnson of Blue Mountain, Mississippi; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends who will miss him dearly.
