Union County MS Volunteer Fireman dies of injuries received fighting grassfire
March 3, 2025: NEMiss.news is sad to report of the death today of Union County Volunteer Firefighter Terry Dykes, who was injured Saturday. Dykes, aged 58, had been a member of the Pinedale Volunteer Fire Department since August 5, 2019. His career was as a detention officer with the Union County Sheriff’s Office.
According to Mark Whiteside of the Mississippi Firefighter’s Association, New Albany Fire Department and North Haven Volunteer Fire Department, Dykes is the first line of duty death of a firefighter known to have occurred in Union County.
Union County Emergency Management Director Curt Clayton said that Dykes suffered major head trauma when he fell from a firetruck. He was involved in fighting a Saturday grass fire on County Rd. 60 when the injury occurred. Lee County Coroner Carolyn Green confirmed that Dykes died in the hospital in Tupelo on Monday, March 3.
Much of Mississippi has been under “Red Flag” warnings due to dryness on Saturday; many fires were reported to be fanned by 40-50 mile per hours winds.
Services for Terry Dykes are expected to be in Baldwyn, MS, but services details are not yet available.
