While stationed on the Navy base in Guam, Mr. Jerry was born into this world on May 11, 1956, to the late Jack Dale and Lelia Joann Carter Ohler. Once returning back home to Tippah County, he received his education from Ripley High School. A jack of all trades, and master of some, Mr. Jerry was blessed with the ability to do anything he put his mind to. He could be found working as a cook, being a truck driver, and mastering the art of fishing and hunting, which he enjoyed the most. Spending over fifteen years with his lifelong partner, Mrs. Sharron Settlemires, the two had a great love for one another and the two were the perfect pair, for he would do anything for her, while in return she always took care of him.
Mr. Jerry always found joy in the simple things of life. He excelled at the game of pool, playing a round of poker or blackjack, which possibly was inspired by his mother’s weekly card games with her sisters, and listening to classic rock and roll, typically on full blast. He was the ideal neighbor, as he usually kept to himself, and was devoted to Sharron, spending everyday with one another. The philosophy on “having four quarters, is better than one hundred pennies any day” fit him well, for he had his small circle of buddies that could count on him always.
Psalms 116:6 states, “The Lord preserves the simple; I was brought low, and He saved me.” Mr. Jerry was no fancy man at all. He never owned the biggest house or finest car, but he was always humble. Blue jeans and T-shirts fit him best, hanging out with those closest to him is what he enjoyed, and his simple home on his little farm is what made him happiest. He knew the greatest joys in life didn’t come from lots of money or materialistic things, rather being true to yourself, having a few faithful friends, and enjoying what the Lord blesses you with. Although his name will never be seen on the cover of any magazine or flashing on a big sign somewhere, Mr. Jerry’s name can be found in the book of life, having a seat reserved at the Lords table, and a place directly at the feet of his Savior, Jesus Christ, where he is now. If that is not a legacy worth having, then there will never be one.
In addition to his partner of fifteen years, Mrs. Sharron Settlemires, those left to cherish his memory includes two daughters, Tarhyn Ohler and Jerrica Ohler, one son, Benjaman Ohler, his bonus daughter, Emily Story (Kameron), two bonus sons, Gerald Barnes (Donna), and Johnathan Holmes, one sister, Bonnie Andrews (Mark), one brother, Jason Ohler, six grandchildren, Journey Ohler, Elyse Story, Kylan Story, Kenlea Barnes, Dalton Barnes, and Ezra Holmes, and one great grandchild, Kamri Story.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and one son, Luke Ohler.
Those serving as pallbearers will be Jason Ohler, Josh Smith, Mitch Smith, Drew Edwards, and Chuck Duncan.
