This year’s 3rd Annual Union County Juneteenth Celebration did not get as much cooperation from Mother Nature as in previous years.

The celebration was originally scheduled for Friday and Saturday June 6 and 7.  The Friday event was able to go forward, mostly as planned, but dangerous thunderstorms rolled through on Saturday, producing quite a bit of damage in the local area.

Casey Keys, President of the Union Co. Juneteenth Committee, posted on FB about the aftermath of the storm:

“To the Union Co. Juneteenth Committee: “If I had to be mid-festival in a battle with strong winds and heavy rain that created a field of debris that was cleaned while the rain was still lightly falling, I’d choose to do it with you guys all over again!! THANK YOUUU!!  Special thank you to our board member Kevin Dale White! You are a jewel!”

“Additionally, Keys said, “While we could focus on losses, I want to focus on the fact that we were granted LIFE even through that storm. We will do our best to reschedule and keep the community updated on the new date.”

The Juneteenth Celebration was rescheduled for Wednesday June 19th, at the Ladies Building of the Union County Fairgrounds. All those who were able to get in enjoyed a celebration filled with music, food and friends.

Congratulations to the Union Co. Juneteenth Committee and all their community supporters for successfully dealing with the unfortunate weather. Hopefully, next year’s weather will be more cooperative and there will be no restrictions on the crowd.
