Anita Pernell, 85

September 8, 1940 – January 31, 2026

Anita Lee Winborn Pernell, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2026, at Baptist Hospital in Southaven. Born on September 8, 1940, in New Albany, MS, Anita’s life was characterized by her unwavering kindness and gentle spirit. She leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories that will continue to live on in the hearts of those she touched.



Anita was the beloved matriarch of her family, survived by her devoted daughter, Jackie Verrell (John), and her caring son, Jim Pernell. Her nurturing love extended to her five grandchildren, Hank Verrell (Meghan), Nick (Xinyu), Tommy (Rebecca), Sammie Pernell, and Matthew Roberts, and one great grandchild, who will miss their grandmother’s warmth and wisdom. Anita’s sister, Norma Garrett, with whom she shared countless joyful moments, will fondly remember their times together. She was also a cherished all the past times spent with her many nieces and nephews. Anita was preceded in death by her dear parents, Harvey Winborn and Ila Bynum Winborn, and her brother and sister-in-law, Harvey Winborn and Connie R. Winborn

Throughout her life, Anita dedicated herself to her loved ones and her friends. As a homemaker, she created a welcoming and loving environment that became a haven for family and friends. Her commitment to her faith was evident in her long-standing membership at New Albany Presbyterian Church, where she was a faithful attendee and an active participant in Sunday School.

Her passion for gardening was evident in the beautiful array of flowers that adorned her home, a testament to her ability to nurture and cultivate life in all its forms. Spending time with her sister was among Anita’s favorite pastimes, as the two shared an unbreakable bond that was filled with laughter and mutual support. Together, they created a lifetime of memories that will be treasured forever. Most importantly, she knew God’s love and knew this day was just a small walk across the Jordan under Jesus’s arm.

Services to honor her life will be on Saturday, February 7, 2026 at 1:30 and visitation will be prior from 12:00 noon until the start of the service at 1:30, both at United Funeral Service.
