Luther Cunningham Sims, 101

May 14, 1924 – April 28, 2026

On May 14, 1924, Luther Cunningham Sims, affectionately known as “L.C.,” was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, to the late Gillie Cunningham Sims and Malissie Blanchard Sims. L.C. left this earthly life on April 28, 2026.

At an early age, L.C. was baptized at Lane Chapel CME Church, where he remained a faithful and devoted member throughout his life. In April 1943, while still in high school, he enlisted in the United States Army. He proudly served his country during World War II and was honorably discharged in February 1946.

Upon returning home, he completed his studies and graduated from George Washington Carver High School later that same year. He then attended Okolona Trade School, where he studied brick masonry. He was active as a Scout Master, member of the Golden Eagles Club and other organizations in the community.

L.C. was passionate about his chosen career as a brick mason. He often shared stories of the many projects he, his father, brothers, and fellow brick masons completed in Tupelo and in various other states. A lifelong member of the Stone Mason Union, L.C. was honored in 2025 by the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers with the prestigious Seventy-Five Year Service Award.

Outside of his work, L.C. enjoyed fishing, gardening, hunting, and planting flowers with and for his beloved wife.

L.C. was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 70 years, Gloria E. Sims; his parents; three sisters, Ruth Layne, Rosie Sims, and Alice Epps; and two brothers, Gillie Sims and Robert Sims.

He leaves to cherish his memory five daughters: Phyllis A. Sims, Janet E. Hampton, Wanda M. Crochrell of Tupelo, Gloria J. Washington (William) of Manassas, Virginia, and Gladys K. Smith of Indianapolis, Indiana; two sons, Gary L. Sims (Lidia) of Huntsville, Alabama, and Michael J. Sims (Sherry) of Tupelo; one brotherinlaw, Hoyle Lee Rogers (Rose); one sisterinlaw, Doris LaGrone; ten grandchildren; nineteen greatgrandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

He would ask that we “ALL” remember his favorite bible verses “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”

– 1 John 2:15 (KJV)
