Hezbollah rejects ceasefire with Israeli occupiers
The US and the Lebanese government claimed earlier this week that Shia militant group Hezbollah had accepted a ceasefire which included halting attacks against Israeli soldiers who have seized about one-fifth of Lebanese territory. Hezbollah’s leadership have now stated that their group had not accepted this agreement. Such an agreement would, in effect, be capitulation to an indefinite Israel military occupation of Lebanese territory.
Israel has signaled they have no intention of giving up the territory and have been systematically driving hundreds of thousands of Lebanese residents off their land since the invasion began in March. Israeli forces have demolished entire villages and conducted house-to-house searches to drive out any residents who have tried to stay in their homes and villages. So far, Israel has killed nearly 3,500 people in Lebanon since March.
Hezbollah has insisted that Israeli soldiers leave Lebanese territory as a precondition to any ceasefire agreement. The group has been deploying unjammable fiber-optic drones against Israeli occupying forces. About 25 Israeli soldiers have been killed in Lebanon since the invasion began, either by drones or Hezbollah ground forces. More than their body count, the drones have had an immense psychological impact on Israeli invaders. The drones run nearly silently and once invaders see or hear the drone, it is too late.
Ball in Trump’s court again
Iran has said repeatedly that any peace settlement with the US and Israel must apply to all fronts – including Lebanon – and that Israeli forces must withdraw from Lebanon as a precondition. It is increasingly clear that illusory ceasefire agreements between Israel and Lebanon’s Western-friendly government will not satisfy Iran’s conditions.
So far, President Trump has succeeded in forcing Israel to back down from announced plans to bomb the Lebanese capital. He has not yet taken the further step of pushing Israel to give up its territorial ambitions in Lebanon and withdraw to its own borders. Until he does so, Israel’s offensive in Lebanon will continue to thwart any prospect of peace with Iran.
