Billy Hugh Burns, 86

December 21, 1939 – September 27, 2026 

Billy Hugh Burns, age 86, resident of Ripley, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 27, 2026, at Resthaven Nursing Home in Ripley.

Funeral services honoring the life of Mr. Burns will be held on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. at New Life Pentecostal Church in Ripley, with Bro. Taylor Garner and Bro. Bobby Goode officiating. Visitation will be held at the church on Saturday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service. Burial will follow in Jesus Name Community Church Cemetery in Walnut.

Born December 21, 1939, in Amory, Mississippi, to the late William Anelo and Adner Bell Burns, Billy received his education through the Amory school system. He later worked as a factory worker for several companies, including Lane Furniture.

Billy proudly served in the National Guard from 1961 until 1968 and took great pride in serving his country. He tried numerous times to return to duty, but unfortunately, health issues prevented him from doing so. His love for his country and his desire to serve remained an important part of who he was.

Billy was a faithful member of New Life Pentecostal Church for more than 50 years. His faith was not simply something he practiced—it was a very important part of his everyday life. He was a godly man who made sure his children were in church every Sunday and taught them from an early age about the importance of faith. When his children were young, he would have Bible studies with them at home, helping to establish a foundation of faith that would remain with them throughout their lives.

Billy shared a special friendship with his pastor, Bro. Robert Hancock. For many years, Billy was his pastor’s shadow, enjoying time together riding horses and drinking coffee. Their friendship meant so much to Billy, and he continued to speak fondly of Bro. Hancock until his own passing earlier in 2025.

Family was at the center of Billy’s world. He loved his children and grandchildren dearly and especially enjoyed having family gatherings. He had a way of making the simplest moments memorable. A visit with Billy was never complete without hearing his familiar farewell, “You take care.” Those three words will forever be a special reminder of him to his family and friends.

And, of course, Billy loved his black coffee. He had to have it at least three times a day—and there was no question that he needed a cup with every meal.

Billy was a man who spoke his mind and was never afraid to tell you exactly what he thought, but beneath that straightforward nature was a man who was deeply loved. He was especially loved by the caretakers at Resthaven Nursing Home, who cared for him and grew very fond of him during his time there.

Billy enjoyed tinkering on old cars with his son, Wayne, making memories that will be treasured for years to come. His daughter, Wanda, affectionately held the title of “the favorite,” a distinction Billy apparently had no problem letting everyone know about. He loved his family, loved having them together, and cherished the time they spent with one another.

Those left to cherish his memory include his two sons, Billy Wayne Burns (Patricia) of Ripley and Bobby Eugene Burns of Falkner; one daughter, Wanda Chessor (Greg) of Selmer, Tennessee; one brother, Chester Burns (Cora) of Ripley; four grandchildren, Nicole Chapman (Steve), Robert Burns, Jamie Chessor (Renae), and Kenny Chessor (Misty); thirteen great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Robert Jason Burns; one brother, Ted Burns; one sister, Eunice Burns; and his loyal canine companion, Shadow. Shadow held a special place in Billy’s heart, and even after his beloved companion was gone, Billy continued to talk about him often.

Those honored to serve as pallbearers include Robert Burns, Mason Ketchum, David Hancock, Chris Garner, Bro. Taylor Garner, and Leon Glisson.

Billy will be remembered as a faithful Christian, a proud veteran, a loving father and grandfather, a loyal friend, and a man who treasured his family. His faith, his stories, his strong opinions, his love of black coffee, and his familiar “You take care” will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

Though he will be deeply missed, his family can find comfort in knowing that the faith he lived and shared with others was a lasting part of his life.
