August Luncheon with Books to feature author Anne Webster
New Albany’s August Luncheon with Books at the Jennie Stephens Smith Library, Tuesday, August 21:
Since 2108 is the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, Luncheon with Books in New Albany will look at Mississippians in the Great War – Selected Letters compiled and edited by Anne L. Webster. Ms Webster searched newspapers from all over the state for “letters home”.
Newspapers from Natchez, Greenville, and Pontotoc provided the most letters. The authors of the letters were soldiers, aviators, sailors, and relief workers in service to their country. They wrote home about their experiences in training camps, the voyage across the Atlantic to France, and the horrific battles. Webster provides a context for the letters with history of crucial dates and various military actions. When possible she gives follow up information after the war for the person who wrote the letter.
This program ties to the Faulkner Literary Festival. The festival is now underway in New Albany and ties to Faulkner festival book Soldier’s Pay.
Beginning at 11:30 AM Historic Northside District Garden will provide a light lunch.
