Baptist Hospital Union County premiers new robotic-assisted surgical system
This morning (February 18, 2025) Baptist Hospital Union County premiered its leading-edge technology for assisting in a variety of complicated surgeries. The New Albany hospital is honored to be the first hospital in the Baptist Memorial Health Care system to implement the da Vinci 5 robot. There is only one other hospital in Mississippi currently using this newest technology.
Members of the local medical community and of the media were invited to the presentation, where “hands on” experience with the da Vinci 5 was available. Chief Nursing officer Heather Reid welcomed the crowd, after which New Albany OB/GYN Dr. Greg Mitchell provided an overview of the features and advantages of the da Vinci 5 system. Dr. Leo Bautista, of Advanced OB/GYN participated in the demonstration. Dr. Perrin Roten and and Dr. Jessica Adams, both surgeons, were on hand to answer questions.
The da Vinci 5 Surgical System from Intuitive is designed to assist in a variety of complicated surgeries, including gynecologic, urologic, thoracic, cardiac and other general surgeries. Robotic assisted surgeries have been shown to improve patient outcomes by reducing pain and blood loss, lowering infection risk, and speeding recovery from surgery. The system makes it possible for surgeons to make precise movements using small instruments inside a patient’s body.
Baptist Union County has been using a previous model da Vinci surgical robot since 2023.
“We are excited to offer the most advanced robotic surgical technology possible at Baptist Union County. This new system sets a new standard of care and has the potential to result in better outcomes for our patients,” said Ann Bishop, chief executive officer and administrator of Baptist Union County.
Union County and the surrounding area is fortunate to have access to the quality healthcare provided to the community by Baptist Memorial Health Care and our local medical practitioners.
