Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union County opens new Cancer Center

New Albany, MS- Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union County (BMH-UC) formally opened its new $600,000 Cancer Center with a ribbon cutting ceremony Tuesday afternoon, August  16th.

About a hundred people witnessed the event at the western end of the hospital campus. The new Cancer Center is located in space previously occupied by the Baptist Union County Emergency Department. The hospital’s new $12-million emergency department opened a little more than two years ago.

BMH-UC Chief Executive Officer Walter Grace presided at the ceremony and introduced other participating dignitaries including:

  • Jason Little, President and Chief Executive officer of Baptist Memorial Healthcare, which operates the New Albany Hospital.
  • Dr. C. Michael Jones, MD, FACP, who is the Medical Director of the new Cancer Center.
  • Rev. Tom Sumrall and Lugie Brown, both members of the Baptist Board of Directors.

Most New Albany and Union County elected officials were on hand, including New Albany Mayor Tim Kent, New Albany Aldermen Johnny Anderson, Kevin Dale White and Will Tucker. Present were all five members of the Union County Board of Supervisors: Randy Owen, Dave Kitchens, Evan Denton, Steve Watson, and Chad Coffey. Circuit Clerk Phyllis Stanford, Chancery Clerk Annette Hickey, Collector and Assessor Randy Dunnam. New Albany Police Chief Chris Robertson, UCDA Executive Director Phil Nanney, Main Street Director Carly Wilbanks were in attendance, as were Jim Owen, in-district representative for U. S. Congressman Trent Kelly, and State Representative Margaret Rogers.

Dr. C. Michael Jones is Medical Director of the new Cancer Center. Dr. Jones received his medical degree from the University of Alabama, Birmingham, and did his residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Dr. Jones is board certified in internal medicine, oncology and hematology. He is an associate of M.D. Anderson Hospital of Houston, TX.

With the opening of the Baptist Union County Cancer Center, Baptist Memorial Healthcare has invested more than $65 million in the New Albany Hospital since 1989, when Baptist Memorial took over management of what was previously known as Union County General Hospital.
