Betty Jean Means Scott, 92
July 27, 1933 – January 24, 2026
Shannon- She was one of Shannon’s most outstanding matriarch’s. Betty loved all things Shannon and was the #1 Shannon Cheerleader in her 55 years of living there. Betty Jean Means Scott’s earthly pilgrimage ended on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2026 while in Rehab at the Meadow’s in Fulton. She was 92 years young-her generous and ageless spirit was shared with everyone she came in contact with.
Born in the Dozier Hill Community of Pontotoc Co. on July 27, 1933 to the late Tom Means, Sr. and Blufie Mauveline Francis Means, Betty attended Saltillo Schools graduating in l951 from Saltillo High School. She continued her education attaining an AA Degree from Itawamba Junior College. She married the late Jim H. Scott, a local educator and Principal at Shannon School until his untimely death in an automobile accident in 1973. Betty remained in Shannon where she raised her 4 sons and many other children who would listen to the good, old fashioned values and truths from “Miss Betty”.
An early and original data processing lady, Betty spent over 30 years with Rockwell Int., a power tool manufacturer in Tupelo. Not afraid of work, she spent the next 25 plus years as a Substitute teacher at Shannon High School. Betty had a wonderful way of approaching students which included often playing a mean hand of spades with them-winning them over much of the time! Betty loved to talk, in person, over the cell phone, at DG, at Church or wherever she was. She called it “checking on her buddy’s” and her conversations were always long and mostly fruitful. A sports fan, she often rode the team bus to sporting events as all 4 of her sons were standout athletics at SHS. A practical jokester and prankster, Betty loved her wide circle of friends but nothing was more important to her than her sons, her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Betty was a longtime faithful and participating member of the First Baptist Church-Shannon.
