Born on June 25, 1941, in Arkansas, Mrs. Betty was the daughter of the late Walter Lee Shoffner and Annie Mae Robison Shoffner. She received her education from Walnut High School and, on June 21, 1983, was united in marriage to her beloved husband, Mr. Phillip Tidwell, who survives. A dedicated and dependable employee, Mrs. Betty worked for over twenty years as a receptionist with Roger’s Gas and Dowell Gas Company before retiring. In her later years, she devoted herself fully to her role as a homemaker—always opening her doors and her heart to anyone who came through, making each person feel welcomed, valued, and deeply loved.
One of the oldest members of Medlock Methodist Church, Mrs. Betty was a faithful and devoted Christian who loved her Savior dearly. Her faith guided her life and sustained her through every season. In her free time, she found great joy in singing at the country music venue in Walnut, proudly remaining the last living member of the New Commanders Group. She also loved listening to gospel and bluegrass music and had a special fondness for all things Betty Boop, delighting in her collection of cherished memorabilia.
Though Mrs. Betty faced many health challenges, including COPD and a long battle with congestive heart failure, she never lost her hope or her gentle spirit. Her strength, faith, and perseverance were a testament to the life she lived and the God she served. While her presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her, we find comfort in knowing she has been made whole and new resting peacefully in the eternal promises of her Savior.
In addition to her husband, Mr. Phil Tidwell, those left to cherish her memories include one son, Vincent Shelby (Polly), one stepdaughter, Stephanie Elliott (James), one daughter in law, Lisa Clark, one brother, Donald Shoffner (Judy), and a large host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, extended family, and many friends.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, her daughter, June Nanette “Nette” James, and her son, Stephen Tidwell.
