President Trump’s border czar Tom Homan has been an outspoken proponent of Trump’s mass deportation policies. He famously said, “I don’t care what judges think” when asked about deportation flights to El Salvador that a judge said violated his order. Multiple sources have now come forward saying that Homan himself was under law enforcement scrutiny in a bribery sting not so very long ago.

According to the sources, the Department of Justice was conducting a separate national security investigation at the end of Biden’s term. During the course of that investigation, the target repeatedly brought up that Homan was accepting bribes in exchange for steering future immigration-related contracts once he took his position in the Trump administration. Based on this tip, FBI investigators in Texas reportedly set up a sting operation targeting Homan and recorded him accepting $50,000. The sources say the recording captured Homan saying he would stash the money in a trust until his service in the Trump administration was completed.

In February, Trump’s then-acting deputy attorney general Emil Bove was briefed on the case against Homan and dismissed it as a “deep state” operation, the sources say. Bove has since been appointed to a federal judgeship. The probe was closed by FBI Director Kash Patel.

Since the reports emerged, the Trump administration has circled the wagons around Homan, saying he “did absolutely nothing wrong“. In a joint statement, Patel and Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche called the probe a “blatantly political investigation” and “yet another example of how the Biden Department of Justice was using its resources to target President Trump’s allies”.

Trump declares “antifa” a “terror organization” – but it’s not an organization

Following Charlie Kirk’s assassination, President Trump and other prominent Republicans have called for a crack down on left-wing groups in the US. This is despite the fact that investigators have found nothing linking accused assassin Tyler Robinson to any left-wing groups. According to one source familiar with the investigation, “Every indication so far is that this was one guy who did one really bad thing because he found Kirk’s ideology personally offensive”. In fact, Robinson’s Discord messages show he was generally centrist politically speaking, but took exception to Kirk’s statements vilifying members of the LGBT community.

Nevertheless, Trump has followed up on TruthSocial with plans for “designating ANTIFA, A SICK, DANGEROUS, RADICAL LEFT DISASTER, AS A MAJOR TERRORIST ORGANIZATION”. He also called for anyone funding Antifa to be investigated. He has now signed an executive order to that effect.

However, antifa does not exist as a group. “Antifa” is shorthand for a broader “antifascist” movement, which first sprung up to oppose Italian dictator Benito Mussolini. Antifa is an ideology and an organizing principle, but there is no centralized platform or leadership the Trump administration could go after. As Rutgers University historian Mark Bray explained, “There are feminist groups, but feminism itself is not a group. There are antifa groups, but antifa itself is not a group”.

People who may identify with antifa as an ideology could self-identify as anything from anarchists and communists to mainstream social democrats and even centrists. Critics fear that Trump’s order could put members of any of these groups, who form the backbone of Trump’s opposition, in jeopardy of prosecution. Some fear that this order sets up Trump to use the pretext of national security to infringe on the First Amendment rights of anyone who opposes him or participates in protests against his policies.
