Sheriff reports car chase suspects in custody

,

The Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol and Union County Sheriff’s Department reported early Friday that a man suspected of stealing an SUV from someone while the person was in the Walnut post office had been captured.

According to the report, the man, accompanied by a female, was found during the night in a wooded area near County Road 100 without incident.

“A deputy spotted and arrested both of them on a creek bank in the Bald Hill area,” Union County Sheriff Jimmy Edwards said.

Edwards added that the two were found about midnight, about nine hours after the incident and search began.

Troopers had spotted the vehicle after the theft report and a chase ensued that went through the New Albany area and ended when the suspect abandoned the vehicle and fled west of the Ingomar community.

Edwards said he should have more information later Friday morning.

The Union County Sheriff’s Department, New Albany Police Department, Ecru Police Department and U.S. Marshals participated in the search as well as the Highway Patrol.

The vehicle was recovered unharmed.
