Alleged car thief captured in Georgia, now in custody in New Albany

A man who allegedly stole a car at a New Albany convenience store on May 14th has been captured in Georgia, and is now in jail here.

Chief Chris Robertson of the New Albany Police Department (NAPD) says he was informed Friday, June 1, by the U.S. Marshall Service that William Zachery Boseman had been arrested in Georgia and was being held there. Finding and arresting Boseman was a joint effort of  U.S. Marshalls and the DeKalb County, Georgia, Sheriff’s Department. Boseman was being held in that county’s jail in the northeast Atlanta suburbs.

At 5 a.m. Monday morning, June 4, NAPD Criminal Investigator Mark Cossett and Patrolman Justin Gregory left New Albany and drove to Georgia. Boseman waived extradition and returned to New Albany with Cossett and Gregory, arriving here late Monday afternoon.

He is being held in the Union County Jail on a $10,000 bond.

Robertson said Boseman has said he intends to plead guilty to the car theft. If he holds to that intention, a public defender will be appointed for him, and he will processed during coming days for sentencing in Union County Circuit Court.

Robertson said he was informed Tuesday, June 5, that the car Boseman is believed to have stolen has been located in Georgia. The car was taken as it sat idling early that Monday morning, while its driver was inside a convenience store on West Bankhead St.

Thus, Boseman was returned to New Albany three weeks to the day from the time he took the car.
