Carolyn Brooks, 89
October 14, 1935 – February 1, 2025
You, My brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather serve one another humbly in love. Galatians 5:13
Wanda “Carolyn” Brooks, God’s humble servant, was born on October 14, 1935 in Union County to Merle and Wordia Sanford and passed away peacefully on February 1, 2025 at Union County Health and Rehab in New Albany, MS
Carolyn was the beloved mother of Tony Brooks (Susan Kendrick) and Kim Moorman (Bobby) of New Albany, MS. She was the proud grandmother of Noah Brooks and Jana Brooks of New Albany, MS, Angela Moorman-Rakestraw (Russ) of Saltillo, MS and Tyler Moorman (Martin Treu) of Chicago, IL. She was also the great-grandmother to Bree Stegall (Johnathan), along with three great great granddaughters Caroline, Rosslyn, and Wittley, all of Etta, MS. Carolyn was also the sister of Larry Sanford (Janie) of New Albany, MS. She also leaves behind a host of very special nieces and nephews.
All of whom she spoiled and loved unconditionally.
In addition to her parents, Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, B.C. Brooks. She was also preceded by a brother, Charles Sanford, and daughter-in-law, Mary Gay Thornton Brooks.
Carolyn was a caring, kind, and generous lady who loved using her talents to serve others. She was also ready to visit the sick or newcomer to town. Carolyn loved her family at Hillcrest Baptist Church where she served on numerous committees. Her true love was serving beside her dearest friends on the hostess committee and in the church’s clothes closet, which she missed terribly after her health failed.
Carolyn used her immense talent for cooking while working in the B.F. Ford cafeteria before going to work at Wal-Mart, a job she loved because she could help and talk with customers and friends.
When Carolyn wasn’t tending to the needs of others, you could find her busy in her garden or growing an array of flowers. She also enjoyed talking on the phone to long time friends. Her greatest joy was cooking for her family and watching them laugh and talk while they enjoyed her legendary meals.
Services for Carolyn will be on Tuesday, February 4, 2025 at Hillcrest Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 2:00pm-4:00pm at the Church with the funeral to follow at 4:00pm. Rev. Don Chandler and Rev. Charlie Davis will be officiating. Burial will be a Glenfield Memorial Park. The family will not have a graveside service.
The family would like to thank the staff at Union County Health and Rehab for loving and serving Carolyn for the last 2 years and to Gentiva Hospice for the dignity you showed her this past week. We will forever be greatful.
