Colter Shaffer, 42
December 1, 1982 – March 2, 2025
It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Colter Mancel Shaffer, beloved husband, father, son, brother, and friend who tragically passed away on March 2, 2025, at the age of 42 due to a pulmonary embolism. Colter was born on December 1, 1982, in Mount Vernon, IL. He made his home with his loving wife of 19 years, Jessica Shaffer, and their two children, Hudson and Leighton.
His love for family was unmatched, and his pride in watching his son, Hudson, grow and thrive as a young man and baseball player, and his daughter, Leighton, light up the stage as a “tiny dancer,” was a constant source of joy. Colter often joked that he could do a better turn than her, but no one ever doubted his admiration for her grace and talent.
A passionate lover of sports, Colter was an ardent fan of the NY Giants, rarely missing a game. He spent his childhood playing baseball and was recently inducted into the Mount Vernon Township High School Sports Hall of Fame as a member of the 2001 Baseball team. He later became a coach for Hudson’s team, a role he treasured. He found joy in teaching and guiding others, both on and off the field.
His enthusiasm for action movies was infectious, and he could always be counted on for a good laugh and an entertaining movie night.
As a professional, Colter was a dedicated and hardworking individual who impacted many lives through his work. He helped hundreds of clients and businesses succeed, grow, and thrive, truly saving companies with his expertise and commitment. His determination and tireless effort made him a respected figure in his field.
Colter is survived by his wife Jessica and children, Hudson and Leighton all of Mooresville NC; his mother Linda Shaffer of Mt. Vernon, IL; father and mother-in-law Robert and Lynn Walsh of Troutman, NC; sisters Kim (Jason) James of Mt. Vernon, IL, Tarra Jennings of Pinckneyville, IL; brother, Roy Stuart of Belleville, IL; Aunts Pam (Jim) Bowman of Tupelo, MS, Vicky Porter of Belden, MS, Cindy (Lucas) Berryhill of Tupelo, MS; cousins Matt Lavender of Tupelo, MS, Michael Bowman of Gainesville, Fl and Adam Bowman of Knoxville, TN; his beloved grandmother, Erma Newell of Tupelo, MS and many nieces and nephews.
Colter was predeceased by his father, Ed Shaffer; grandfather, Bill Shaffer; step-grandfather, William “O.T.” Newell; and grandparents, John and Esther Rye.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on March 15, 2025, at 1:00 PM at Casey Avenue Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon, IL. Friends and family are invited to join in remembering Colter’s life.
In lieu of flowers, Colter’s family requests that donations be made to support his wife, Jessica, and children, Hudson and Leighton, during this difficult time. A GoFundMe has been set up in their name for those who wish to contribute.
Colter’s memory will live in the hearts of those who knew him, and his legacy of love, laughter, and dedication will never be forgotten.
