Although both candidates for the state Senate District Three seat were on the agenda, only one of them spoke to the Union County board on October 28.

Tim Tucker, the Democratic nominee, told the board he is opposed to abortion and is in favor of funding improvements to Mississippi’s roads and bridges. He said he favors public education, that money spent on public education “is not an expense, it is an investment.”

Tucker, a native of Pontotoc county has been a New Albany resident for six years. He told the board he attended Bible college as a younger man and is an ordained Protestant minister. He went to law school while in his 30s, graduated, and passed the Mississippi bar. He is a practicing attorney.

Kathy Chism, the Republican nominee for the state Senate seat, was on Monday’s agenda but did not appear to speak before the board. She had visited the board of supervisors earlier this year.

The county board conducted routine business such as approving school bus turnarounds and the monthly solid waste register.

The board approved a federal matching grant agreement allowing Union County and the City of New Albany to install new LED lights at the local airport.

The Union County Board of Supervisors will meet again at 10 AM Monday November 4.
