Amory-Daniel Ray Underwood, a proud veteran of the U.S. Army and Reserves, passed away on Sunday, November 23, 2025 at Rosewood Retirement Center leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and devotion to his family . Born on Sept 27, 1942 in Mobile, Alabama to the late Dayton Underwood and Reba Lois Moore Underwood, a military family, Danny spent his teenage years in Alaska, lived many years in Illinois, then Fulton before eventually settling in Amory, Mississippi, where he lived from 1986 until 2022. During his many years in the community, he was a devoted member of First Christian Church in Amory. Danny worked for many years in maintenance with the Cheshire (Xerox) Company in Illinois, where he was known for his reliability, hard work, and friendly spirit until he became disabled. Outside of his work, he enjoyed spending time outdoors, fishing, golfing, and camping. At home, he loved watching classic television shows, especially Leave It to Beaver and old westerns, with Gun Smoke and Wagon train being his longtime favorite. Danny will be remembered for his gentle heart, his love for his family, and the simple joys he embraced throughout his life. His memory will continue to live on in the stories, laughter, and love of all those who knew him.
A service celebrating his life will be held at 1 PM Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2025 in the Sadie Holland Memorial Chapel at Holland Funeral Directors-Tupelo with his daughter, Tina speaking and Rev. Kenny McGill officiating. Danny will be laid to rest in the Rutledge-Salem Cemetery in Tishomingo Co. Visitation will be from Noon-service time on Wed., all at Holland-Tupelo Chapel which is honored to again be serving their friends.
A loving father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Danny cherished his family above all. He is survived by his daughters, Sharon “Sherry” Walker of Fulton and Tina (Nickey) Coggins of Tupelo; and his son-in-law, Gary Thompson of Amory. He leaves behind a generation of grandchildren who adored him: Chris (Jenna) Walker, Mandy (Ben) Moore, Jake (Malorie) Moore, Ryan (Tatum) Moore, Zack (Amy) Coggins, Sarah Kay (James) Davidson, and Nick Coggins. He is also survived by his sisters, Betty Myatt of Shreveport, Louisiana; Linda Joy of Dallas, Texas; and Wanda (Frank) Ratcliff of Fulton. Danny was preceded in death by his wife, Faye Underwood; his mother, Lois Moore Underwood; daughter, Kim Thompson and the mother of his daughter, Mary Ann Underwood; his parents, Dayton and Reba Moore Underwood; and his siblings, Joe Underwood and Priscilla McDaniel.
Honorary pallbearers will be Chris Walker, Ben Moore, Jake Moore, Ryan Moore, Clayton McGinnis, and Gary Thompson. Danny loved the ministries of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. His family asks that memorials be made to St. Jude, 262 Danny Thomas Way, Memphis, TN 38105.
