Delma Vanlandingham Young, 86
June 7, 1937 – June 22, 2025
Okolona – Delma Mae Vanlandingham Young was born in New Albany on June 7, 1937 to the late Wesley Durran Vanlandingham and Gladys Larraine Hearn Vanlandingham. She departed her earthly pilgrimage on Sunday, June 22, 2025 from Oak Tree Manor in Amory where she had resided the last year. “Miss” Delma was 86 years old. She graduated from high school in Memphis. Delma married Bobby Young of Chickasaw Co. in 1958. From 1961 till hse moved to Oak Tree Manor, she and Bobby made Okolona their home. To this union was born 4 children; Anna, Sandra, Mike and Andy. Her first devotion was that of a good wife and a great mother. Delma graduated from Miss. State College for Women (The W) in Columbus and many years later, earned her Master’s Degree from the University of Mississippi. She taught physics and chemistry in the public schools of Okolona for many years. A talented lady whose interests were varied, Mrs. Delma greatly enjoyed being an artist of significance painting landscapes, seascapes and beautiful magnolias. She enjoyed travels about the country and was a “crafty” lady who enjoyed making decorative items and silk follower arrangements. Her many cats were her precious babies. She was first a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church but spent many years as a member of the First Baptist Church of Okolona. She was the widow of Bobby Young who died in 2018.
A service celebrating her life will be held at 2 PM Wednesday, June 25, 2025 from the Okolona Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors with her pastor, Rev. Dr. Randy Lewman officiating. Private burial will follow in Boone’s Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 PM – service time on Wednesday only at the Okolona Chapel.
She is survived by her children, Anna Marie Laray of Bay St. Louis, MS, Sandra Denise Spoettl (Guntram Karl) of Okolona and Anthony Eugene “Andy” Young (Tina) of Okolona; her grandchildren, Kendall Young Brown, Ainsely Young Payne, Eli Young, Joseph Wesley Laray, Vincent Louis Laray, Katherine Sandlin, Rikkita Sandlin, Corey Sandlin, Morgan Young, Austin Blansett and Daneille Young and their families; several great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Bobby, her son, Michael Wesley Young and two siblings, Maura Ruth Lacey and Louis Morris Vanlandingham.
