Democrats furious after 8 Senators strike deal to end shutdown without ACA subsidies

A breakaway faction of 8 Senate Democrats has made an agreement with Senate Republicans to pass funding bills that will allow the government to reopen. The deal they have struck calls for a vote on extending Affordable Care Act (ACA or ObamaCare) subsidies, but does not offer any guarantees for their extension. The ACA subsidies had become the main sticking point in negotiations with Republicans, who have refused to offer any guarantees until Democrats reopen the government. Without the ACA subsidies in place, health insurance premiums are already skyrocketing.

The deal on table only fully funds the government until January 30. Even if it passes the Senate, it will still have to go through the House. There will likely be more votes and debate on the bill before it can be sent to Trump’s desk for his signature.

Although this deal has been negotiated behind the scenes for weeks, many elected Democrats have expressed outrage. For the last several weeks, the momentum has been with the Democrats in the shutdown fight. Polls have consistently shown that the public have blamed Republicans more than Democrats for the shutdown, despite aggressive messaging from the Trump administration. Last week, a series of major electoral wins for Democrats across the country seemed to signal a rejection of Trump’s policies by voters. Now many Congressional Democrats feel the 8 Senators have given up the political leverage and momentum that has been building.

Although Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) criticized the plan and voted against him, many of his fellow Democrats are pointing the finger of blame at him. Progressive Democrats including Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) have called on Schumer to be replaced as Senate Leader.
