It is with a heart full of love and cherished memories that we announce the peaceful passing of Doris Lena Watwood Whitten, affectionately known as Doris, on May 18, 2025, at her residence in New Albany, Mississippi. Doris, born on February 2, 1937, in Memphis, Tennessee, led a life adorned with the joy of giving and nurturing.
Doris was the loving matriarch of a large and vibrant family. She leaves behind a legacy of love through her three daughters, Tamara Powers (Jeff), Katheryn Adkins (Tracey), Mary Crawford (Greg); and her son Tim Whitten (Kristin). She will also be missed by her 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Doris’s journey through life is tenderly bookmarked by her treasured memories with her husband, Leland Whitten, who predeceased her.
Daughter of the late James and Lena Watwood, Doris was the caring sister to her predeceased siblings, Mary Crossman and Jean Larabee, and she held close the memory of her daughter Robin Gallegos and grandson Coen James Adkins.
Doris’s generous spirit shone brightly in her years as the beloved cafeteria manager for New Albany High School. Her servant’s heart extended beyond her profession as she poured love into every dish she cooked for family gatherings and special events.
An avid reader, Doris found solace in the pages of books and the beauty of her garden, tending to her flowers with delicate care. Her early years of traveling brought her immense joy and broadened her appreciation for the world’s vast beauty.
Doris was a cherished member of the Hillcrest Baptist Church community, and her unwavering faith and friendly demeanor touched the lives of many.
