Dorothy Gaines, 89
December 8, 1935 – September 29, 2025
We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.”
2 Corinthians 5:8
On September 28, 2025, Dorothy Benjamin Gaines took her first breath in Heaven, greeted by those who had gone before her.
Born on December 8, 1935, to James Herman and Modie Richardson Benjamin, Dorothy lived a life defined by her love for God, family, and friends. A devoted member of Calvary Methodist Church for more than 65 years, she and her husband, Maxie, raised their family with a strong foundation of faith.
Dorothy loved cooking, flowers, and hosting, and she was always ready to watch a good basketball game. She enjoyed nothing more than cooking everyone’s favorite foods and gathering around the table with her loved ones, sharing stories, and making memories. Beautiful flowers were always in bloom in her garden, as she delighted in tending to her flowers and piddling in her yard. In retirement, Dorothy traveled with family and friends, embraced new adventures, and took many memorable trips. Her enthusiasm for each experience was contagious, transforming every trip, meal, gathering, or game into a joyful chapter of her life’s story.
Her legacy will live on with her son, Joel Gaines and his wife Lisa; daughter-in-law Rosemary Gaines; grandsons Brock, Hunter, and Spencer Gaines; granddaughters
Betsy Wages (Mason) and Sarah Cagle (Sam); great-grandson Atticus Wages; and Vicki Childress, close family friend. Also left with cherished memories are sisters Nellie
Witt, Jo Crawford (Jerry), Martha Bullock, and sister-in-law Bobbi Benjamin. Loved ones who greeted her in heaven include her parents, husband Maxie Gaines,
son David Gaines, brother James Benjamin, brother-in-laws Bobby Witt and Edward Bullock, and two infant siblings.
