Dorothy Shannon, 92

SHANNON – Dorothy Estelle Wright Shannon passed into heaven at the North Mississippi Medical Center Hospice Unit on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at the age of 92. She was born May 23,1932, to Lester Edward Wright and Della Estelle Rich Wright at their home in Tupelo, MS, the youngest of four children. Dorothy graduated from Shannon High School and was married to John Paul Shannon on September 23, 1951 until his death in 2002. She received nurses’ training at Itawamba Community College and MD Anderson in Houston, TX. She worked at Northeast Mississippi Medical Center for 32 years as a nurse and enterostomy specialist. She started the wound center at the medical center.
Dorothy enjoyed traveling around the world while participating in and leading many medical mission trips with Global Outreach to Honduras, Belize, Chili, Uganda, China and Romania. She was a faithful member of Shannon First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and sang in the choir among other areas of service. She was a member and past President of the Shannon Woman’s Club. Dorothy was also a member of the Brewer Homemakers Club. She was known by family and friends as a fantastic cook.
Dorothy lived at Traceway Manor for many years where she enjoyed many friends spending her time sewing, crafting and playing cards. She especially enjoyed growing plants and flowers. She spent the last five months at Landmark Lifestyles Assistant Living.
She is proceeded in death by her parents, Lester and Della Wright; her stepmother, Ozella Wright; her husband, Paul Shannon; her sister, Kathleen Wright Eddins; her brothers, Dr. Charles Wright and Trenton Wright; and her son-in-law, Robert Hendrix.
She leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Becky Hendrix and Jean Hathorn (Dale); five grandchildren: Shannon Hendrix of Shannon, Paul Hendrix (Ashley) of Ecru, Samuel Hathorn (Kate) of Muscle Shoals, AL, Michael Hathorn (Bailee) of Moulton, AL, and Hannah Seymore (Dale) of Nettleton; eight great grandchildren: Evie Hathorn, Mauve Hathorn, Wright Hathorn, Taegan Hathorn, Beckett and Bankston Hathorn, Warren and Emma Hendrix.
The family wishes to thank the staff of North Mississippi Medical Center ER, ICU, ICU Stepdown, 3rd South, and Inpatient Hospice Unit for the excellent care, especially Dr. Calcote and Dr Spikes. Dorothy loved her special caregivers at Landmark: Ashley ”lil bit” Orr and Letha Turner.
A family burial service will be held at the Shannon Cemetery followed by a memorial service at Shannon First Baptist Church at 2 PM on Saturday, October 12, 2024. After the memorial service, all family and friends are invited to a fellowship meal in the family life center. Holland Funeral Directors is honored to serve the family.
