Edwina Sue Gabriel McMillian, 89, affectionately known as “Suzy Q” by her family and friends, passed away on Friday, February 28, 2025, at North Mississippi Medical Center Hospice in Tupelo. Born on February 27, 1936, in Bailey, MS, to Harvey Gabriel, Sr. and Sallie Hughes Gabriel, Suzy Q lived a life marked by hard work, dedication, and a deep love for those around her.

A talented athlete, she played basketball on a scholarship at East Mississippi Junior College in Scooba, MS. Her strong work ethic led her to become a successful businesswoman, first as the owner of Seven Day Grocery in Mooreville, MS. She later managed Coleman’s BBQ for many years before opening her own beloved restaurant, Suzy Q’s BBQ, which thrived for three decades. Afterward, she transitioned into real estate management with TRI Realty before retiring at the age of 74. In addition to her many accomplishments, she was also a professional bowler.

Suzy Q loved her family and friends fiercely and found joy in many passions, including Ole Miss football, animals, cooking, and fishing. Her warmth, humor, and kindness left a lasting impact on all who knew her.

She is survived by her son, Lowery Keith Smith; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many beloved cousins and in-laws. She was preceded in death by her parents.

A service to celebrate her life will be held at a later date. She will be laid to rest beside her parents at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Bailey, MS.
