19th Annual William Faulkner Literary Contest entry deadline drawing near

If you have been told you have “a way with words”  you may wish to consider entering the 2017 William Faulkner Literary Contest. Entries are accepted in several categories, there is no entry fee, and over $5000 in cash prizes will be awarded.

Entries must have been previously unpublished, and can be made on-line. Authors may enter from anywhere in the world.

The Faulkner Competition honors New Albany’s favorite son, William Faulkner. Faulkner won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1949, in addition to Pulitzer Prizes in 1955 and 1963 and 1951 and 1955 National Book Awards. This will be the 19th year for the competition.

Only the winners will be notified by email or mail. Winners will be announced and honored at the Faulkner Literary Luncheon on September 22, 2017, at the First Methodist Church in New Albany, MS., the birthplace of William Faulkner. Guest speaker at this event will be John Maxwell presenting his “Oh, Mr. Faulkner, Do You Write?”

A donation by former Union County resident Eric Saul helps to make this competition possible, in addition to the New Albany Gazette, which has strongly supported this event in the past, the Union County Heritage Museum, Holiday Inn Express, and several local literary and educational groups, including: Friends of the Jennie Stephens Smith Library, New Century Club, Junta Club, Pilot Club, Retired Teachers, Sigma Chapter of Kappa Kappa Iota, and the Tallahatchie Arts Council. The competition has also been supported by a City of New Albany Tourism grant and a New Albany Rotary Club grant.
