FBI believes notes in Nancy Guthrie kidnapping are fake, source says

An anonymous FBI official tells Reuters that the FBI has assessed three notes purportedly from the kidnappers of Nancy Guthrie are not genuine. Guthrie, 84, was kidnapped from her Pima County, AZ, home in the early hours of February 1 this year. Despite the efforts of state, local, and federal investigators, no trace of Guthrie has been found since. Guthrie is the mother of NBC morning show personality Savannah Guthrie. Savannah Guthrie and her siblings have released several public statements following their mother’s kidnapping, including some in reply to supposed communications from the kidnappers.

In the days immediately following Guthrie’s disappearance, news outlets like TMZ received communications purporting to come from the kidnappers and demanding ransom in the form of cryptocurrency. It was recently reported that one of these notes had indicated that Mrs. Guthrie had died shortly after being taken from her home. However, Reuters’ source indicates that the FBI now believes that these notes were hoaxes.

They believe the same is true of another note received by TMZ last week from someone claiming to know the identities of the kidnappers. This third note was also demanding cryptocurrency in exchange for information.

The FBI did not reveal how they determined these notes were fake. To complicate matters further, TMZ has another FBI source who says the Reuters report is not accurate, though the source did not specify what the inaccuracies in the report were. TMZ also revealed they had received more than one communication from the man claiming to know the kidnappers’ identities.

Months of investigation in this perplexing and troubling case have produced few viable clues, at least in terms of what has been revealed publicly. Until now, law enforcement was treating Guthrie’s disappearance as a ransom kidnapping. These new revelations, if true, would cast doubt on that theory.
