Four Union Co. Fire Departments receive Class 7 Fire Ratings

Fire Protection Rating upgrades Union Co

The Union County Fire Service is proud to announce that the fire classification ratings for Center, East Union, and Ingomar have improved to a SEVENTH CLASS fire rating as determined by the Mississippi State Rating Bureau.  In addition, the classification rating for the City of Myrtle has also been lowered to a SEVENTH CLASS and the area that lies 5 road miles from the Myrtle Fire Department and outside the city limits has been lowered to an EIGHT CLASS.

Departmental fire ratings are given on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the best classification. Insurance rates are also tied to these classifications.

After recent visits by the rating bureau to survey the fire departments to determine a fire insurance classification, these changes were made.  The survey included examining records of the department such as training, force response for building fires, maintenance records, 911 communications, age and testing of the engines, and hydrant flows.  Many man hours were put forth by department personnel to achieve this rating.

The Class 7 and 8 public protection classification applies to eligible properties (properties having a needed fire flow of 3,500 gallons per minute or less) located within the legal boundaries of the city or the fire protection grading district, within five road miles of the Fire Station and within 1,000 feet of a standard public fire hydrant. Properties not within 1,000 feet of a standard public hydrant will receive the split classification (7X) or (8X).
