CR 77 fire destroys shed, RV

North Haven and Myrtle fire departments and New Albany Rescue responded to a report of a structure fire on County Road 77 just after 7:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.

North Haven was dispatched at 7:34, had a truck en route at 7:36 and was on the scene at 7:39.

“This shows the dedication and importance of volunteer fire fighters in our county to leave their home, be at the station and have a truck rolling to the scene of the incident and be on the scene this quick,” New Albany Deputy Chief Mark Whiteside said.

“Upon arrival, we had a fully involved storage building with an RV inside and reports of a person inside the RV,” he said. “North Haven immediately reported this and requested New Albany Rescue to the scene for search and rescue, equipment and manpower.”

“Anytime we have the possibility of entrapment or a fire fighter in trouble we roll our rescue crew from the city for assistance and what we call our RIT (Rapid Intervention Team) for our firefighters that become trapped while searching or doing interior fire fighting,” Whiteside continued. “It is an added extra for the residents we serve or the safety of our county volunteers.”

All trucks on the scene deployed fire hoses and hooked to a nearby hydrant for fire attack. Crews were sent in for a search and then a secondary search to confirm no victims were there.

Union Sheriff’s officers then attempted to locate the person that was in reported inside. The person was later located safe away from the structure.

No injuries were reported and the storage building, contents and RV were a total loss, Whiteside said.

At this time Union County Sheriff Department investigators are conducting an investigation into the cause of the fire. All units were cleared and back in service at 9:50 a.m.
