Four arrested in Jackson triple homicide
On Saturday, Keyana Weathersby, 25 and Erica Weathersby, 30, (sisters) and 2-year-old Camari Givens, 2, (Keyana’s son) were gunned down in their home in a residential neighborhood of Jackson. The hideous crime sparked a days long manhunt with Jackson Police Department receiving help from both the FBI and the US Marshall’s Service.
Four people have now been arrested in connection with this triple homicide and all have been charged with capital murder. In Mississippi, anyone charged with capital murder is eligible for the death penalty, regardless of their role in the crime or whether they committed the murder themselves. It’s not clear at present if JPD is still seeking other persons of interest in connection with this crime.
Jackson Police Department Chief RaShall Brackney has said that the crime against the Weathersby sisters and little Camari were targeted. She said it did not appear that Camari, who was killed in his bed, was a victim of crossfire.
Chief Brackney has not offered any insight on a potential motive but said in an interview this week that the victims and assailants knew each other. In a press conference today, she also credited the community for coming forward with tips and said these arrests would not have been made so quickly without information from the public.
Arrests
On Monday evening, JPD announced the arrests of two suspects, Cornelius Carter and Jordan Carter, both 28. The two men, who are not related, were apprehended in a traffic stop. Three firearms were found in the backseat of their vehicle. Investigators have not yet determined if any of these weapons were used in the crime. Both men have extensive criminal histories including convictions for violent crimes. WLBT reports that Cornelius Carter was wearing a court-mandated ankle monitoring device at the time of the shooting. Both men were denied bond and have been charged with capital murder.
A third suspect was arrested on Tuesday, Mikayla Young, 25. The Clarion Ledger reports that during Young’s July 1 hearing, investigators said Young had driven the Carters to the residence where the crime took place. Investigators said Young knew that a robbery was planned but drove away when she heard gunshots. Young is also charged with capital murder.
JPD announced Thursday that the US Marshalls arrested a fourth suspect in Texas. Chief Brackney said at a news conference that the fourth person, who is now identified as Devone Modacure, also faces a capital murder charge. Jail records from Texas indicate that Modacure is 32.
