French Legion of Honor Award presented to WWII Veteran John JD Roberts
On February 15, 2024, Mr. John JD Roberts was honored with the prestigious French Legion of Honor award at the Magnolia Civic Center in New Albany, Mississippi. This was the first know awarding of this medal in Union County.
The ceremony began with welcome remarks by Post 72 Commander Mr. Teddy James. There were then tributes by friends Joe Bryant, James Byers and Dean Burchfield, as well as US Senator Roger Wicker.
The bestowing of the Legion of Honor Medal was performed by the French Consul General Anne-Laure Desjonquères, from Atlanta GA.
John “J.D.” Roberts, a veteran of B Company, 117th Infantry, 30th Infantry Division, served in World War II. He fought in various campaigns, including the Battle of Mortain, and was awarded several medals for his bravery, including the Purple Heart and Combat Infantry Badge. The ceremony concluded with a reception in the Magnolia Room, where attendees celebrated Mr. Roberts’ remarkable service and dedication to his country.
