Giant hail falls in Mississippi, more severe weather expected overnight

This afternoon, a severe weather system moving across the South dropped a hailstone measuring about 5″ across in Brooksville (Central Mississippi)More severe weather is expected throughout the night, particularly in Central Mississippi. Adams County is expecting possible golf ball-sized hail. Jackson, Vicksburg, Philadelphia, Laurel and Hattiesburg are in for severe weather overnight, with hail and thunderstorms likely and tornados possible.

Student loan repayments to resume in October after 3-year hiatus

The US Department of Education says that student loan debt holders will have to resume paying down their debts on October 3. Student loan repayments have been paused for about 3 years since the pandemic through repeated moratoriums by both Trump and Biden. 

The Supreme Court is currently weighing two cases to determine whether President Biden has the authority to forgive student debt. Biden declared an amnesty of $10,000 for most borrowers and $20,000 for Pell Grant recipients. Republicans and conservative groups have challenged the debt forgiveness and the program is currently on pause.

Student debt relief advocates have predicted that there will be a record number of defaults on student debt when payments resume.

Greece: Migrant boat disaster leaves 79 dead and hundreds missing

A fishing boat carrying hundreds of refugees from Libya to Italy capsized off the south coast of Greece. Greek coast guard vessels managed to save about 100, but 79 are known to have perished. Other passengers on the boat say hundreds are still missing. Survivors believe there may have been between 500 and 700 people aboard, mostly young men with ages ranging from 16 to their 40s. This may be one of the deadliest migrant boat disasters since 2010. Greece has declared three days of mourning for the victims.
