Herbert Morgan, 98
September 30, 1925 – September 13, 2024
Herbert Alan Morgan, 98, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family and caretakers on September 13, 2024. He was born September 30, 1925 in Rossville, Illinois to Herbert E. and Harriett Angeline Kenney Morgan. Herbert was a 1942 graduate of Cayuga High School in Cayuga, Indiana. Shortly after high school graduation he began his short World War II military career with enlistment into the United States Army on March 10, 1944. His life forever changed on December 21, 1944 when he was severely injured when a shrapnel from a German artillery shell entered his spine. Herbert was immediately paralyzed and spent his remaining life in a wheelchair. However, this disability did not define him. After several years of rehabilitation at Kennedy Army Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, Herbert earned a business degree from Draughn’s Business College. In 1953, he married Marianne Gentry of Ingomar, Mississippi. Herbert and Marianne moved to New Albany in 1957 and adopted their daughter, Sherri in 1959. He served as the Union County Veterans Service Officer from 1959-1988, where he enjoyed serving the needs of Union County veterans.
Herbert was a life-time member of the American Legion where he served as post commander for two terms and post adjutant for 26 years. His service was honored by naming the American Legion building, The Herbert A. Morgan War Memorial Building located at the New Albany Fairgrounds.
During his life, Herbert served his community by participating in numerous activities: former member and officer in the Ingomar Lions Club, former member and officer in the Northeast Mississippi Angus Association, volunteer for the Good Samaritans where he also served as a member of the board of directors, named one of Union County’s Most Admired Citizens, 2000 Grand Marshall of the New Albany Christmas Parade, 2003 honorary Relay for Life chairman, 2004 recipient of the State of Mississippi Personal Achievement Rehabilitation Award, 2017 Baptist Memorial Hospital “Tree of Love” honoree.
Herbert was an active member of Hillcrest Baptist Church where he has served as Sunday School Teacher, deacon, chairman of the deacons, church treasurer, and church trustee. He truly enjoyed being a part of his “Hillcrest Family” extending a helping hand wherever needed.
Herbert’s favorite past-times were being on the farm keeping his property well maintained where he raised black angus cattle. He also enjoyed dove hunting, working in his workshop, and watching his Chicago Cubs and other sports.
Herbert was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather.
He is survived by his daughter, Sherri Ann Robbins (Barry) of New Albany and two grandsons, Walter Morgan Robbins of New Albany and Dr. Wesley Robbins of Greenville, South Carolina, his sister Joan Hepburn of Wichita Falls, Kansas, two brothers Dale E. Morgan of Nacks Creek, Missouri and Robert D. Morgan of LaGrande, Oregon, and several nieces and nephews who fondly called him “Uncle Bud”.
Herbert is preceded in death by Marianne Gentry Morgan, his loving wife of 68 years, his parents Herbert E. and Harriett Angeline Kenney Morgan, two sisters Bertha Walker of Winter Haven, Florida and Beulah Stockton of Portland, Indiana, and two brothers Raymond Gene Morgan, and Earl Otto Morgan both of Cayuga, Indiana.
Visitation will be at Hillcrest Baptist Church from 4:00-7:00pm on Thursday, September 19, 2024 and 12:00-2:00pm Friday September 20, 2024. Funeral services will follow. Rev. Dean Timbes, Rev. Charlie Davis, and Rev. Don Chandler will officiate. Graveside services will follow with military honors by the Potter Henry Lowery American Legion Post 72 at Vista Memorial Park, New Albany.
Pallbearers will be Caleb Chandler, Bill Cousar, Jason Jordan, Dale Manning, Gale Manning, and Dr. Tim Thompson. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Potter Henry Lowery American Legion Post 72 and Mr. Zack Stewart.
