James Brett Hobson, 45
September 13, 1979 – June 7, 2025
“The legacy of a good man is not measured by the loudness of his voice, but by the strength of his character and the quiet love he leaves behind.”
James Brett Hobson, lovingly known as Brett to all who knew him best, passed from this life on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at Magnolia Hospital in Corinth, Mississippi, at the age of 45. Though his time on earth was far too short, the depth of his love, loyalty, and strength left an indelible mark on all who were blessed to know him.
A service celebrating Brett’s life will be held at 3 PM on Thursday, June 12, 2025, in the Heritage Chapel of the Ripley Funeral Home. Visitation will begin at 2 PM until the time of service, with Bro. Steve McKee officiating. Following the service, a private family burial will take place in Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery in Walnut.
Born on September 13, 1979, in the Tippah County Hospital, Brett was the cherished son of Mrs. Linda Bullock Hobson and the late James Leroy Hobson. A proud graduate of Walnut High School, Brett was never one to settle—he furthered his education at Northeast Mississippi Community College before earning his bachelor’s degree from Ole Miss. He brought that same drive and determination into his career, where he was a skilled and respected electrician. His time with FedEx was marked by tireless dedication; Brett often worked harder and longer than most, never one to complain, always taking pride in a job well done.
A true patriot at heart, Brett held a deep and abiding love for his country. He honored the flag, respected the freedoms many take for granted, and stood with pride beside those who served. He was especially proud of his brother, Alex, whose military service Brett regarded with deep admiration and gratitude. Their bond was unshakable—built on long talks, mutual respect, and a shared passion for history and country.
Although Brett was known to keep his circle small, his heart had room for great love. That love was found in his beloved fiancée, Tara Skinner. The two crossed paths just over a year ago, and from their first meeting, something simply clicked. Tara brought out the best in Brett, encouraging him to open up more, laugh more, and experience life beyond his quiet corners. Not long after they met, he asked her to be his wife, which will always be a moment filled with hope and love that will be forever treasured.
Brett’s passions were as steady and grounded as he was. He found peace in the outdoors—whether fishing on a quiet morning, caring for animals, or off-roading in the Jeep with Tara riding shotgun. He was a skilled cook, known for crafting hearty meals with care, and he was a walking encyclopedia of history, always ready to dive into a conversation about the past, connecting lessons of history to the world today.
He was a man of few words, but endless depth. He loved deeply, worked relentlessly, and lived with integrity. He didn’t need attention or applause—just time with his loved ones, a peaceful day outdoors, and the knowledge that his work and life meant something. Though the world is a bit quieter without Brett in it, his values, love, and legacy will live on in every hardworking hand, every flag raised high, and every memory shared around kitchen tables and campfires.
Those left to carry forward his legacy include his devoted mother, Linda Hobson; his fiancée and true love, Tara Skinner; his brother and closest confidant, Alex Hobson (Maha); his nephew, Vincent Hobson; and a host of extended family, co-workers, and friends whose lives he quietly and deeply touched.
He is preceded in death by his father, James Leroy Hobson.
Those serving as pallbearers include Josh Berry, Justin Martindale, John Caldwell, Luke Bennett, Cole Wilbanks, and Joey Jones
He was a good man. A loyal son. A loving brother. A devoted fiancé. A true American. And now, may he rest in peace, wrapped in the honor he so humbly carried in life.
