Jean Howell Mattox

Jean Howell Mattox, 91, died Monday, March 11, 2019, after a brief illness.

She was born in New Albany on August 16, 1927 to Luther and Hattie Howell. A graduate of New Albany High School, she was a homemaker and a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She married James Boyd Mattox on November 20, 1945.

She was a member of Myrtle United Methodist Church and she enjoyed cooking for her family, collecting antiques, spending time with grandchildren, and watching sports.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 14th, at Myrtle United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jeff Dalton, the Rev. Eugene Stockstill, and the Rev. Jeff Lawrence officiating. United Funeral Services is in charge of arrangements.

She is survived by her daughter, Brenda Mattox Koon, son-in-law Larry Koon and daughter-in-law Debbie Mattox all of Myrtle; brother-in-law Thomas (Pap) Morris, a special niece Ginger Morris Hodges both of Birmingham, Ala.; sister-in-law Sara Lynn Mattox, niece Sandra Sumner, and nephew Bill Mattox all of New Albany; eight grandchildren, Jo Fairy Riley (Jon) of Iuka, Mattox Koon (Kim) of Pontotoc, Jeana Koon of Myrtle, Virginia Metts (Caleb) of New Albany, James Michael Mattox II of New Albany, Luke Koon (Emily) of Hernando, Tess Mattox of New Albany, and Emma Woods (David) of Red Banks; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her sister Jo Ann Morris, her son James Michael Mattox, and her great-grandson Jacob Howell Koon.

Pallbearers are Mattox Koon, Luke Koon, Jon Riley, Jim Riley, Caleb Metts, David Woods, and Bill Mattox. Honorary pallbearers are Evan Denton, Hugh Tate, Kelly Thomas, and Joe Rials.

Visitation will be from 5-8 pm Wednesday, March 13th at United Funeral Services in New Albany. The body will lie in repose from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Thursday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to New Haven School or Myrtle Methodist Church.
