Joe Megginson Hill, 90
September 6, 1936 – November 5, 2026
After ninety years of a good life filled with running dogs, time spent outdoors, and the love of family and friends, Joe Megginson Hill departed this old world and entered his Heavenly Home on Thursday morning, November 5, 2026, at North Mississippi Medical Center Hospice Floor in Tupelo, Mississippi.
Funeral services honoring Mr. Joe’s life will be held at 2 PM Sunday, November 8, 2026, in the Heritage Chapel of Ripley Funeral Home, with Bro. Randy Hurt officiating. Visitation will begin at 12 Noon and continue until service time. Burial will follow in Blue Mountain Cemetery, where a graveside service will be held.
Born September 6, 1936, in Tippah County, Mr. Joe was the son of the late Homer Henry and Birdie Lou Godwin Hill. He graduated from Blue Mountain High School in 1955 before continuing his education at Northeast Community College. A hardworking man who understood the value of earning his way, Mr. Joe spent his working years in the furniture industry, including many years with Benchcraft and Barclay before his retirement.
A Christian and member of Lowrey Memorial Church in Blue Mountain, Mr. Joe found contentment in a simple life. He needed little more than a good day outdoors, a pack of dogs to run, and familiar friends to share it with. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting of all kinds, but running dogs held a special place in his heart. Over the years, he trained young puppies for many people, sharing the patience and knowledge that came from a lifetime of doing something he loved.
Some of his happiest hours were spent at the pens with his late buddy, Danny Wooley, and the many others who gathered to run dogs and chase coyotes. Those days offered more than a good hunt; they brought fellowship, stories, and friendships that lasted a lifetime. Known over the CB radio as “Red Rider,” Mr. Joe’s familiar handle became a name fondly recognized among his hunting buddies and friends.
When he wasn’t running dogs, Mr. Joe could often be found tending a large garden. He enjoyed watching things grow, but sharing the harvest was just as rewarding. Family, friends, and neighbors alike benefited from his generosity, as he gladly shared his produce with anyone who could use it.
As the years passed and trips to the pens became fewer, Mr. Joe spent more time doing what he called “keepin’ the TV company.” He enjoyed a good basketball game or golf tournament, with a little news and the Weather Channel mixed in to keep him informed. Whether outdoors with his dogs or settled in at home, he remained a man who appreciated the everyday comforts of life.
Above all, Mr. Joe’s family held a cherished place in his heart. His ninety years leave behind memories woven into the lives of his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and the many friends who knew him best. His legacy lives on in the example of his hard work, the generosity of his garden, and the lasting bonds formed while doing the things he loved.
Those left to cherish his memory include two daughters, Karen Shelton (Lanny) and Renea McElhaney (Bo); three grandchildren, Ethan Moffitt (Kristin), Kaitlyn Hogue (Jeremy), and Joseph Wilson; four great-grandchildren; and numerous extended family members and dear friends.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Joe was preceded in death by his beloved wife and the love of his life, Connie Crutcher Hill, and his brother, James “Jim Allen” Hill.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers will be Ethan Moffitt, Joseph Wilson, David Hill, Greg Yates, Mark Warrington, and Darrell Hurt. Honorary pallbearers will be Daryl Hall and Willie Johnson.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Mr. Joe’s hospice nurses, Rosanna, Sharon, Amanda, and Deborah, along with many others who faithfully showed their love and care during his final days.
Though his familiar voice is now quiet, the memories of “Red Rider” will remain with those who shared a hunt, a conversation, or a lifetime of love with him. Until we meet again, ol’ buddy—over and out, Red Rider.
