John Daniel Chunn, 90

February 29, 1936 – September 9, 2026

John Daniel Chunn, known to many simply as John Chunn, passed away on September 9, 2026, in Ripley, Mississippi, following a brief battle with cancer. He was born on February 29, 1936, in Tippah County, and he lived a long life marked by faith, devotion, service, and a deep love for the people around him.

John was preceded in death by the love of his life, Mary Etta Wilson Chunn, the one who kept him walking a straight line, and by his parents, Leroy Chunn and Ophia Bullock Chunn, his siblings, Loretta Easley and Edward Chunn. Their memory remained close to his heart throughout his life, and he carried their influence with him in the way he lived, worked, and cared for others. He leaves behind a family who loved him dearly and who will forever treasure his memory.

He is survived by his children, Cynthia Chunn Short and her husband Warren, Randy Chunn and his wife Shellie, and Lisa Chunn Miller and her husband Barry. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Robert Moffitt, Amy Pope and her husband Braden, Konrad Short, John Daniel Moffitt and his wife Angie, Kristen Witt and her husband C.J., Craig Chunn and his wife Kaitlin, Rachel Queen, Jayce Null and her husband Dustin, Callee Moody and her husband Austin, Devinn Smullins, and James Elijah Hill. His legacy continues through his eighteen great-grandchildren, Greyson Short, Clara Short, Jabez Moffitt, Josiah Moffitt, Gabbie Moffitt, Dawson Short, Lyla Pope, Khloe Short, Max Moffitt, Annie Witt, Betsy Witt, Hudson Chunn, Maggie Witt, Mary Chunn, Brylen Null, Braxton Null, Hadleigh Graves, and Brenton Null. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, all of whom were blessed by his presence and his strong example. A very special place in his later years was held by Betty Jackson, his dear friend and caregiver, whose kindness and care meant so much to him.

John served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Korean War, defending the great nation he loved. After his military service, he worked as an over-the-road truck driver and later as an owner-operator of his own truck. He took great pride in his work, and he and Mrs. Mary Etta enjoyed seeing so many sights together as they traveled the roads of this country. His life was one of hard work, responsibility, and perseverance, and he carried those qualities with dignity.

A Christian man, John was a lifetime member of Pine Grove Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon for many years. His faith was not something he spoke of only in words, but something he lived out in his daily walk. He was a man of God who treasured his family and understood the importance of standing firm in what was right. His church family knew him as a faithful servant, and his loved ones knew him as a man who could be counted on in every season of life.

Mr. Chunn was truly one of a kind, with a personality bigger than life. He loved a good laugh and enjoyed telling jokes to anyone who would listen. He played a mean game of dominos and might have been caught cheating a time or two, always with a grin and a twinkle in his eye. He enjoyed camping and traveling, and he found joy in the simple pleasures of life. Above all, he was loving, kind, and funny, and those qualities made him a blessing to everyone who knew him.

Services to honor his life will be on Saturday, September 12, 2026 at 11:00 am with visitation being on Friday September 11 from 5-8pm and Saturday from 10 until the start of the service. All will be at Pine Grove Baptist Church in Benton County
