KY Sen. Mitch McConnell has been hospitalized for weeks, condition unknown

On June 14, Sen. Mitch McConnell’s staff announced that he had been admitted to the hospital. They offered no medical reason for his hospitalization, saying only that he was “receiving excellent care”. McConnell has now been in the hospital for three weeks and his office remains tight-lipped about his condition. Today, his staff said he was “continuing his recovery” but offered no information about when (or whether) he is expected to be discharged or return to work.

Last week, an independent journalist released emergency dispatch audio from the June 14 911 call to McConnell’s home on Capitol Hill that preceded his admission. The call describes a patient being unconscious having suffered an apparent cardiac arrest and says CPR is in progress.

The day after this 911 call, Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Majority Whip John Barrasso both claimed to have spoken with McConnell by phone. Both Thune and Barrasso said McConnell was “engaged” and eager to return to Congress.

McConnell, 84, has suffered very public health episodes in recent years, the severity of which were consistently played down by his Republican colleagues and staff. This includes two instances in 2024 when McConnell froze while speaking on camera. At that time, McConnell was still Senate Republican leader. He announced he was stepping down from that position months later.

McConnell announced last year that he would not seek re-election has Kentucky’s longest serving Senator, having first taken office in January 1985. In the meantime, he continues to serve on several important committees and subcommittees and even currently chairs some of them.
