L.J. “Joe” Rhynes, Jr., 82

December 31, 1942 – September 3, 2025

L.J. Rhynes, Jr., known to nearly everyone as “Joe,” passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, MS, following a brief illness.  In keeping with his wishes, Mr. Rhynes will be cremated.  The family deeply appreciates your prayers during this time of loss.

Born December 31, 1942, In Oxford, MS, to the late L.J. Rhynes, Sr. and Delta Moody McCullough, Joe was a man of quiet strength and generosity.   A Baptist by faith, he worked many years at Master-Bilt before retiring twenty years ago.

From an early age, Joe learned the value of hard work, beginning with logging as a young boy.  Skilled with his hands, he could repair any piece of farm equipment and could sharpen a chain saw by hand.  Joe loved farming and enjoyed fishing, but his greatest joy came from his family, especially his beloved granddaughter, Kristen.  Whether sitting and talking with her, taking her on rides, or waiting for her to get off the school bus, her presence always lit up his face.

Joe is survived by his son, Ricky Rhynes, three treasured grandchildren, David Rhynes (Kim), Kristen Rhynes, and Lane Wilson, five great-grandchildren, Emily, Makayla, Andrew, Kacie, and Abby Rhynes, four sisters, Lilly McCullough, Ruby Dye, Mary Fuller, and Joyce Sims, six brothers, Wilson, Jimmy, James, David, Tinker, and Bob Rhynes, as well as a host of nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Pearler and Patty Rhynes, one brother, Jim Rhynes, and his stepfather, Guy McCullough.
